I used to think that I would never ever wear my gym sneakers outside of the gym. But as the sneaker trend has blown up in the past year, I’ve found that there are ways to wear sneakers and still look stylish, and the bonus of it all is that I can also be comfortable at the same time. So today I’ll be sharing my three tips on styling sneakers with items that you likely already own, I promise it’s easier than you think!
Tip 1: Pair the sneakers with a skirt. This is a good way to balance out the athletic vibe of the sneakers and instantly look more put-together. In terms of the type of skirt, because I’m shorter in height I usually choose a length that hits at the knee or above to lengthen the legs. Here I’m wearing a slim pencil skirt, but I’ve also styled sneakers with a pleated skirt in this post, and another option I’d like to try is a super flared skirt.
Tip 2: Amp up the accessories. When I’m wearing a more casual shoe, I like to dress up with fancier jewelry and a fun bag. Here, I chose a pink Cluse watch (my newest obsession btw), a gold bangle, multiple rings, and topped it all off with a diamond necklace. I like the juxtaposition of a fancy item like a diamond necklace with casual gym sneakers – it’s all about playing with high and low and mixing it up. I also styled the outfit with a mini cross-body bag that fits with the more active vibe of the outfit.
Tip 3: Incorporate another athletic piece in the look, such as a cute sports bra. The reason I like this tip is that it helps make the sneakers look like they belong in the outfit. Something I’ve struggled with when it comes to styling sneakers is getting over the voice in my head that’s telling me the outfit doesn’t look right, so I find that including another athletic piece makes the look more cohesive. I chose my beloved Alexander Wang x H&M sports bra to match the darker color of my sneakers. The great thing about a sports bra in particular is that it also hits on the crop top trend – while it’s not actually a top, the effect is very similar and goes nicely with a high-waisted skirt. You could also try a chic mesh jacket, or even a sports headband. Anything that gives a sporty vibe should work.
