3 Tips on How to Style a Vintage Jacket

Hope everyone had a good long weekend and lots of eating and R&R. I found this gorgeous suede vintage jacket at the Housing Works UES store opening for only $48! Can you believe it?! I knew it was meant for me the moment I put it on. It’s one of those quintessential vintage pieces at a great price that only comes once in a while. I love the poufy shoulders, burnt orange color, and structured shape. Because the jacket is so vintage, it can be kind of hard to style without looking like a costume. Like all vintage items, the key is balancing the outfit with more modern pieces. Read on for my top 3 tips on styling a vintage jacket.

3 Tips on Styling a Vintage Jacket

  • Tip 1: Pair it with a classic print that goes with everything, like stripes. There’s nothing more modern than a casual striped tee, and it adds just the right amount of casualness to a vintage jacket.
  • Tip 2: Pair it with a short skirt or skinny jeans. For a vintage jacket that’s not cropped, I would not recommend a longer skirt as this could start to look a bit granny. Pair it with a youthful short skirt for a flirty vibe, or skinny jeans for a cool girl touch. For a cropped vintage jacket like what I’m wearing in this post, a midi length skirt could work to balance out the shorter jacket length.
  • Tip 3: Add on a trendy item, like a choker necklace. There’s nothing like a trendy item to take an outfit from 19th century to the 21st century.

For this outfit, I paired the jacket with a striped tee and floral skirt for a fun and feminine look. I chose brown leather booties from Vionic for a classic touch, and a coral Kate Spade shoulder bag to complement the burnt orange of the jacket. I finished the look with two trendy accessories: a burgundy velvet choker and my JORD wood watch. I wanted the outfit to exude the sense of Autumn with warm, cozy tones.
