Corsets are traditionally a piece made for romantic nights in the bedroom. But as you guys all know, I’m all for unconventional dressing and styling a piece in a new and unexpected way. Last week I shared how I styled workout leggings outside of the gym in this post. So when I received this corset from AdoreMe, I wanted to challenge myself to wear the corset outside of the bedroom and see if I could come up with a chic outfit. I have to admit it was not the easiest piece to style and I had to try a few outfits before achieving a look that worked.
Tips on How to Wear a Corset Outside of the Bedroom
Layering is your best friend. I believe this is the most important tip when it comes to styling a corset and making it appropriate for wearing in public, especially in cooler weather. My first step was to layer the corset over a lace turtleneck. The key to achieving this look is to find a tight fitting top to serve as the under-piece, and match the top with the corset depending on the color and style of the corset. Since the piece I chose is light pink with feminine details, I paired it with a pastel colored turtleneck to keep with the romantic vibe of the look.
Wear something high-waisted on the bottom. Traditional corsets usually hit at the hip like the one I’m wearing, making it hard to style with normal clothes. Proportion wise, I find that the most flattering way to style the corset is with a high-waisted piece that can cover up part of the corset so that it looks more like a bustier top. So I paired it with high-waisted pink pants for a soft and feminine look.
Wear it with confidence. I know this may sound cheesy, but I firmly believe that if you wear something with confidence and feel good, others will think the same. Don’t be afraid to stand out and wear something different. So what if you’re wearing a corset outside of the bedroom? You’re getting the most out of the piece and owning it, and that’s all that matters. Who knows, you might even inspire someone else to be bold and take a risk with clothing!
I completed the outfit with heeled black booties and my Celine ring bag to add a touch of elegance and sophistication. For my jewelry, I kept it super feminine with rose gold bracelets and dainty rings. How pretty is this pearl ring from Happiness Boutique? I love the minimal design with the rose gold band. Happiness Boutique is a German based website with tons of cute jewelry and accessories, and they also offer free shipping! You can get 10% off any purchase of 19 euros or more with code layersofchic. I’m also wearing nail polish in “Touch-Me-Not” from Heroine.nyc, you can learn more about the brand in this post.
