I’m loving all the layering that’s going on in this outfit. Some of you might think that I’m crazy for wearing a sheer lace dress during the Winter, but I just couldn’t wait to wear this dress. I’ll let you in on a little secret: layering is the answer to making all your summer dresses work for cold weather. You just need to get a little creative with it, so today I’ll be showing you how to layer even the flimsiest dress for a winter outfit.
The key to layering a sheer dress is to find the right layer that goes underneath the dress. Since this lace dress is sheer all over and black, I wanted to pair it with a strong color underneath so that the black lace would pop. So I chose a mustard colored turtleneck top with a graphic print to create a sharp contrast against the sheer lace. This creates an impactful visual effect while also keeping me nice and warm. When layering a dress, you also need to be mindful of the shape of the top underneath. The worst thing is to end up looking bulky, so be sure to choose a top that is slim fitted and would go well underneath a dress. The good thing about winter is that you can wear opaque knit tights under a sheer dress, so this eliminates the need to wear another bottom layer. I’m only wearing my black knit tights, but as you can see it looks totally fine and you can’t tell I’m not wearing a bottom piece. To make the outfit look extra stylish and winter appropriate, I added a fur vest over the dress as a third layer. The best rule of thumb: always make the dress the second layer, with one base layer underneath and one layer on top for an extra pop.
Now let’s talk about this sheer lace dress for a second. I’m kind of obsessed with it and can’t wait to wear it during the Summer with pretty lingerie underneath. I got the dress from a shopping app called LuvIt, which I’ve previously written about them in this post. One of my favorite things about the app is that it features smaller brands that you wouldn’t necessarily find at department stores, such as this dress which is from a brand called Genuine People. This dress is only $49, which is amazing to me based on the quality and design of the dress. Doesn’t it look way more expensive?! So if you’re looking for some new Spring pieces, be sure to download the app at the iTunes store and follow me @layersofchicblog.
For the rest of the outfit, I chose my Coach leather mules and new favorite Wildfox sunglasses to add an edgy vibe to the look. I’m not usually a sunglasses girl but have recently really gotten into wearing them after acquiring these black aviator frames and this pink pair, both of which miraculously fit my face. I completed the look with a black watch and stacked leather bracelets, and my Chloe Drew bag for a luxe touch.
