Color blocking is one of my favorite trends and go-to outfit ideas. For someone who loves color, it’s like a dream come true to be able to combine different colors into one outfit and call it cool. Wearing a color block outfit may seem scary for those of you who don’t love color as much as I do, but it’s really not as hard as you think. Read on for my style tips on putting together a successful color block outfit.
The key to wearing a color block outfit is to choose coordinating colors with simple silhouettes. Let the colors do the talking and be the center of attention. Start with one piece and build the rest of the outfit and colors around that piece. For my look, I started with a navy wool coat with color blocked elements on the pockets and back detailing. I knew I wanted to keep the silhouette streamlined, so I went with a cropped sweater and ankle length jeans. To achieve the color block effect, I chose a turquoise sweater and coral jeans. For my shoes and bag, I went with pastel colors for both, with pink boots and a lilac bag. An easy way to pull off a color block look is to choose 1-2 statement colors that pop. Here I have the coral and lilac, both of which are unique colors that stand out. Another thing to note is that every piece of my outfit is a different color. This is crucial to a great color block look.
For my jewelry, I added more pops of color with a velvet bow choker necklace, a funky Kate Spade monster bracelet, and various rings in different styles and colors. Since the essence of a color block outfit is fun and creative, I wanted my jewelry to match that vibe. For an extra touch, I even painted my nails in a platinum silver to contrast against the lilac bag. Color blocking is all about strong color contrasts, and the details can really make a difference!
