Vintage Style Mod Dress: How to Dress Like the 1960’s

This is the year of blog series content, and today I’m starting a new series of vintage through the decades, where I recreate vintage style outfits for the modern day. The original plan was to do this series in sequence starting from the 1920’s, but it proved to be harder than I thought to source items in sequence. So this first post is inspired by the 1960’s, specifically the mod dresses that are one of my favorites from the decade. There is something so chic about going mod, from the shift style dresses to the socks and sunglasses. See below for some of my inspiration in creating my 1960’s outfit.

How to Dress Like the 1960’s

  • The Dress: I was really inspired by the flower power mod dresses, so I decided to get a similar style dress from Gamiss. Full disclosure that my dress is not real vintage, just vintage-inspired. But it looks pretty on point, with the big flower print, shift style, and bold colors.
  • The Socks: As you can see from my inspiration board, colorful socks are a must, either full length or knee length. I went with knee high pink and white socks from Opening Ceremony that add a quirky feminine touch to the outfit.
  • The Accessories: No mod look is complete without round sunglasses and big earrings. Good thing I recently bought a pair from Gentle Monster that turned out to be perfect for this outfit. Going on a slight tangent, I have recently discovered my love for Gentle Monster. Based in South Korea, this is the only semi-affordable brand with sunglasses designed for the Asian face that also look stylish. You have no idea how long I’ve struggled with finding sunnies that fit and look good on my face and that don’t cost $500. I am basically converted to Gentle Monster for life.

For the rest of my outfit, I went full vintage with a vintage clutch and vintage flats. Note that both pieces complement the yellow and green colors in my dress. I really like the overall effect of this look. While it is vintage-inspired, it still works for the modern day with the cool sunglasses and complementary colors. Bonus points is that this dress can be styled in so many different ways to take it out of the vintage territory completely. Paired with just pumps and a fur clutch, it becomes a chic look for a cocktail party.
