70’s Style Flared Pants: How to Make Neutrals Interesting

I rarely wear neutrals, so this outfit is definitely a bit of departure from my usual looks. I like to mix it up once in a while and try different things, plus I figured it would be fun to challenge myself to make neutrals interesting. I built the outfit around these 70’s style suede flared pants from I Love Tyler Madison. These pants totally remind of the bell bottoms I used to wear as a teenager, and of course I’m digging the retro boho chic vibe. Unfortunately the pants are super long on me, so even with wedges they are almost at the floor. I will be getting them hemmed, and for reference I’m 5’3. I paired the pants with a flowy white top and added a vintage fringe vest for a boho touch. Read on for my tips on how to dress up a neutral outfit.

How to Make Neutrals Interesting

  • Add a pop of color: To break up the all neutral look, I chose a mint blue handbag. This is the perfect way to add a pop of color while still keeping the look streamlined and sophisticated. A shoulder bag that doubles as a crossbody bag is even better if you want the bag to be more pronounced in the outfit.
  • Pile on statement jewelry: To make this neutrals outfit interesting, I heavied up on the statement jewelry. I’m obsessed with these eye rings from Michal Golan, they are super eye-catching (haha!) and the colors and detail on each ring are gorgeous. I like wearing multiple ones for a funky vibe, and I think they go really well with a more muted look. I paired them with layered gold rings for balance on both hands. I also stacked on arm candy with a wood watch and multiple bracelets.
  • Wear White Aviators for a Sharp Contrast: Complete the look with white-rimmed aviators that pop on your face and match the neutrals in your outfit. Aviators also naturally have a 70’s vibe to them, so this goes well with the flared pants.

For my shoes, I went with the highest wedges I own so that they can peek out slightly from under the pants. I also want to give a special shoutout to Akiko Nails for giving me the best nail art ever. This was actually my first time getting nail art and I am officially an addict! Granted the whole process took 2 and a half hours, but it is so worth because it lasts 3 weeks, and who doesn’t want to have fun colors and prints on their nails?! For my NY readers, definitely go check them out if you’re looking to do something special or if you just love nail art as much as I do 🙂

  6. As a past-student of fashion design, I know how important it is to have accessories that ” pep up” plain fabrics. It really is easy, yet so few people use accessories to full advantage!

I love the whole outfit you really nailed it! The shoes are the most eye catching and in my opinion, make the entire outfit flow. The only thing that I honestly do not like is the purse. I think the color of it throws off the perfection of the rest of the outfit. However, I am a straight male with no fashion sense so don’t take that to heart!
