A big part of why I started my blog is to encourage others to step outside of their comfort zones when it comes to style and take fashion risks. I’ve never been a conventional dresser, and I hate the idea of having to dress a certain way. I usually don’t care about what strangers think in terms of how I dress, but one of my most vivid memories was when my ex-boyfriend made a snarky comment about my outfit (hence he’s my ex ha!). That day I was wearing this exact neoprene top, paired with a floral skirt and spiky leather leggings. I remember how he said the outfit was “so strange, everyone is looking you” but it was the way he said it in such a derogatory tone. At that moment I kind of knew he was not the right guy for me (although it took me a few more months to really figure that out), because it wasn’t even what he said, but the way he said it. I hated that he felt like I had to dress a certain way or couldn’t dress a certain way, and that he didn’t understand how I felt about style. Style has always been so personal to me and is an expression of who I am. Why do we have to conform to society’s standards of what is acceptable to wear? There’s freedom of speech, shouldn’t there be freedom of dress without being judged?
So my point is that it is OK to take fashion risks, and more importantly it is fun! I get a weird satisfaction from walking down the street and having people stare. Sometimes I want to shout at them “What are you staring at? You’ve never seen a fashionable girl?!” I get a lot of comments from you guys about how you feel like you could never pull off certain pieces or looks. Well, I disagree. You can, it is all about your mentality. Embrace the risks, embrace being different and standing out. That’s my challenge to you.
Now a few words on this dramatic outfit. This big vintage circle skirt is one of my oldest and most beloved pieces. When I wear it I feel like I can fit a small child under my skirt! To balance out the big proportions, I paired with with a crop neoprene top. For my accessories, I went with fun tassel earrings and mirror sunglasses for a street style cool vibe. I completed the look with black and white platform sneakers for a sporty touch. A special shout-out to MB45 for doing my hair and giving me a fabulous braid and waves. If only my hair could look like this every day!
