If you want to leave your date speechless, this backless maxi dress from Tobi is definitely the way to go. A good summer date night outfit can be tricky and there is a fine line between showing just the right amount of skin and showing too much skin. Plus during the summer clothes are inherently more casual, so it can be hard to find the right outfit that looks dressy but still chic. That’s why I love maxi dresses for summer date nights, as I see them as a more vamped up version of a shorter summer dress. This Tobi dress strikes just the right balance with the low back but covered up front, making it effortlessly sexy and sultry. You really can’t go wrong with this dress as it is universally flattering and super comfortable. I like that the dress is not super long and unmanageable. I’m 5’2 and sometimes even with heels maxi dresses are too long, but this one is just the right length with heels.
To play off of the backless silhouette, I decided on an unconventional accessory: temporary tattoos. I have to admit that I have not worn tattoos since high school when it was all the rage, but I had some from a festival-themed PR package I received so I figured this was the perfect chance to pull them out. I went with a long silver leaf tattoo along the small of back, as well as a gold bird tattoo on the right of my back. I also added a star tattoo on my upper left collarbone. My other big accessory is this cool black and white clutch from Wren & Roch. The story behind Wren & Roch really resonated with me as the brand was created with the mission to empower women who have been subjected to rape, domestic violence, and sexual abuse. A portion of the proceeds for every handbag sold goes back to raising awareness and preventing abuse, and the brand encourages women to be confident, bold, and carry your courage. In fact this handbag is named “Street Smart – Will Power,” and it really does make me feel powerful when carrying it. You can get 15% off any purchase on Wren & Roch with the code XO_MARY! I thought it was appropriate to pair this handbag with an equally defiant and powerful dress.
This dress really does make me feel empowered, so much so that I’m actually not even wearing a bra. It felt liberating and exciting to go out without a bra and confidently wear this open back dress. I actually took the subway in this dress and got a lot of stares, and I felt oddly satisfied that people were staring. I thought, LET THEM STARE, have they never seen a girl in a nice dress take the subway before?! I love the boldness of this dress and the ability to stop people in their tracks. It makes me feel like a million bucks.
