I’m starting off the new year with one of my favorite topics: vintage fashion! As you all know I love finding vintage gems and mixing them with modern pieces, so today I wanted to share my top 5 vintage fashion essentials and how to find and style them. If you don’t regularly shop vintage, it can be intimidating to find pieces that you can actually picture yourself wearing. Admittedly, not all vintage is good vintage, and not all vintage can work for everyone. Throughout my years of shopping vintage, I’ve found there are 5 vintage essentials that you usually can’t go wrong with and which even a vintage newbie can own.
5 Vintage Fashion Essentials Anyone Can Own
A Vintage Denim Jacket, like the one I’m wearing in this photo. A good vintage denim jacket can be your favorite new wardrobe staple. I love a vintage jacket because there are unique details that make it so much more special than just any denim jacket. The jacket I’m wearing is an example of a true gem that I found at Edith Machinist – the velvet sleeves and gorgeous embroidery make it a statement piece. When shopping for vintage denim jackets, look for special details such as embroidery, buttons, and distressed elements. You can see my other vintage denim jacket in this post with an adorable cat embroidery. Metropolis Vintage NYC also has a large variety of vintage denim jackets at affordable prices.
A Pretty Vintage Dress. There’s nothing I love more than a vintage dress that will make you feel like the prettiest girl in the room. Look for details such a floral print, a special fabric, or a classic fit and flare shape. Awoke Vintage has a great selection of wearable vintage dresses. A good styling trick is to pair a vintage dress with another layer either under or over the dress for a modern look. You can see how I styled this velvet vintage dress here, as well as vintage slip dress under a silk kimono jacket.
A Quaint Vintage Handbag. This is probably one of the easiest vintage pieces to shop for. Anyone can pull off a vintage handbag, and it adds instant femininity to your outfit. I like bags that are small with a structured shape, like the navy one here or a straw bag with a vintage print. Try the Brooklyn Flea market or Stella Dallas.
A Pair of Vintage Heels. Vintage heels are so classic and can be dressed up or dressed down. It could spice up a casual look with jeans, or be the cherry on top of a super feminine outfit. My favorite pair of vintage heels are these grey pumps I found at Edith Machinist, they are so comfortable and go with everything. I also love my vintage polka dot heels that add a fun pop of color and always make me smile.
A Vintage Leather Vest. I left this for last as it’s probably the hardest piece to find and style. A vintage vest can be just what you need to add a boho chic vibe to your outfit. Look for a vest with fringe detail or interesting leather work, like the ones I’m wearing here and here. The right vest is the perfect third piece and adds dimension to your look. I’ve had luck at Housing Works and the Brooklyn Flea.
For this outfit, since the jacket is so eclectic, I paired it with a simple white sweater dress. I chose pink velvet boots to give the look a trendy touch. I kept my jewelry minimal with just some dainty rings to let the jacket be the star of the show. I can’t wait to wear this jacket for NYFW in February with more statement pieces for a super bold look.
I hope this post has encouraged you to shop more vintage. There’s nothing like the thrill of finding a unique vintage piece, and trust me the hunt is just as fun as the buying! Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below.
