This past weekend I took a little staycation with the boyfriend and stayed a night at CitizenM, an alternative NYC boutique hotel. The reason I describe it as “alternative” is that the hotel does not have a check-in concierge, there’s no room service, and all the rooms are the exact same size. This makes the hotel very affordable, with prices starting at $159/night. Being located in Manhattan, this price is a bargain for NYC. So when I was asked to try out the hotel I was intrigued by the concept, and who doesn’t love a staycation right?
I have to admit that I was hesitant about the location of the hotel as it’s marketed as being located in Times Square. While this might be great for tourists, for someone living in NYC I usually avoid Times Square like I avoid the plague. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the hotel is not actually in Times Square, but rather on 50th street between 7th and 8th avenues. This immediately made things better as I was able to take the train to 50th street and avoid Times Square all together. Additionally, once I arrived I realized that the hotel is only a block away from my favorite matcha place in the city, Bibble & Sip. I don’t go there as much given the location, but if you stay at CitizenM you must give it a try as it has the best matcha latte in the city, as well as the most delicious pastries and cream puffs.
Upon entering the hotel, I was greeted by a spacious lobby and living room area, where you can do work, read, or just relax. I liked that there is a library space which is very conducive to working, and the entire hotel including the common areas have free WiFi. I checked-in via a kiosk by entering my name, and was surprised to find that there is staff standing around the kiosks for assistance. Since I arrived to the hotel earlier than my boyfriend, I chilled in the lobby for a bit and took advantage of the free WiFi. I found it to be very comfortable, it felt like I was in someone’s nicely decorated living room.
All the rooms in the hotel are the same size, and are super space-efficient. The first thing I noticed when I entered the room is the ginormous bed that is definitely the highlight of the room. The bed is an XL king bed and is situated next to a huge window, making it a great opportunity for pajama photos (as you can see in the below photos). There are also cheeky pillows that add character to the room, and of course a TV mounted on the wall. After spending the night my only complaint about the bed is that I wish it was softer.
Being a modern-concept hotel, everything is the room can be controlled by the in-room iPad, which allows you to adjust lighting (there are different mood settings like “romantic” and “movie”), the TV, and select which movies you want to watch. So you can literally control everything in the room without leaving the bed. You also get 2 free movies per night, which the boyfriend and I totally took advantage of and watched Allied and Snowden.
As I mentioned the room is very space-efficient, with the sink actually being outside of the bathroom. The bathroom is an orb-like structure with a toilet and shower, but no tub. The space is small, but clean and modern, and has everything you need. I quite liked the packaging on the toiletries, and there were nice extras like ear cleaners, a shower cap, and makeup remover pads. The room also has a small desk that can be used for eating or working.
Lastly, there are actually two closets in the room, each with hanging space and shelves for extra storage. For an individual or short trip there is definitely enough space for all your clothes, and there is also a big storage drawer under the bed for your suitcase. Did I mention how amazing the bed is for photos? I was finally able to shoot these Adore Me silk pajamas, and I’m so wishing I had a bed facing a huge window like this at home.
My favorite part about the CitizenM hotel is the rooftop cloudbar, offering panoramic views of the city. There is an indoor and outdoor component to the bar, and lucky for us the weather was super nice the night we stayed and so we were able to have drinks outside. The major perk about the cloudbar is that it’s only accessible to hotel guests, so you won’t find it super crowded or disruptive. We went on a Friday night and it was calm and peaceful, the perfect place to relax and enjoy a drink. Speaking of the drinks, the cocktails were delicious, although a bit pricey at $14/drink. But for a special occasion, it’s totally worth it for the view and atmosphere, and is on-par with typical hotel bar prices.
The next morning, we stuffed ourselves at the breakfast buffet. The breakfast does not come with the standard price of the room, but can be added on for $19/person. Given the amount of options at the buffet, I think this is a pretty good deal. There were eggs, sausages, bacon, hash browns, pastries, a yogurt station, and fresh coffee and juices. Everything was tasty and I was pretty satisfied with the food.
So all in the all, I enjoyed the mini staycation at CitizenM. I think the hotel is a great option for if you’re traveling alone or with your significant other and are looking for an affordable yet cool option. This hotel is not a good option if you’re traveling with a friend and want separate beds, as every room is standard and there are no options for separate beds or extra cots. I liked the modern aspect of the hotel, and while the rooms were small it didn’t feel cramped and everything was nicely done. The pluses for me were definitely the huge bed and the cloudbar.
